Today's auto care blog focuses on your fuel filter. Dirty or contaminated fuel can cause a variety of problems with your engine. The fuel injectors can become clogged and your vehicle engine may not get the proper amount of fuel at the correct pressure to run efficiently. This hurts fuel economy and performance and can also lead to the buildup of harmful deposits on valves in the combustion chamber.
All vehicles come equipped with a fuel filter, although on many vehicles the filter is inside the fuel tank and is not serviceable. The fuel filter is designed to filter (stop) dirt and debris from getting to the engine. Dirt and debris can get into the fuel tank at any gas station. The filter will eventually get clogged and need to be replaced. Failing to replace the filter (for those that are accessible) when scheduled can cause problems that can result in costly repairs. Fuel filters for diesel engines need to be replaced more frequently than those that run on gasoline.
If your fuel filter is clogged, the engine can't get all the fuel it needs, and it may demonstrate symptoms such as sputtering, delays in taking off, engine miss or in severe cases the engine will not run. You may find that you need to get a fuel filter replacement more frequently as your vehicle ages. Over the years, additional sediment and debris accumulates in your fuel tank and can be drawn into the fuel system. Your fuel filter stands guard at the gates to your engine to protect parts and to maintain performance and fuel economy. For more information, contact a Clay County Transmission professional.
